Breast augmentation is the most popular procedure in plastic surgery, and with the advancements in implants over the last decade the results of the procedure are better than ever. Women who have smaller breasts can have them enlarged by inserting an implant behind their natural breast tissue. The implant can be placed either above or below the pectoralis (chest) muscle, and it can be placed through a variety of incision sites.
Being fellowship trained in cosmetic breast surgery, Dr. Hermann has extensive experience in breast augmentation. He uses the BodyLogicTM System to take precise measurements of your natural breasts to help select the exact implant size and dimension to provide the look and outcome that you desire.
Breast augmentation surgery is an outpatient procedure with a comparatively quick and easy recovery. Breast augmentation is considered a cosmetic procedure and therefore is NOT covered by insurance. Please see the Breast Augmentation FAQ for more information.
What should I expect after breast augmentation surgery?
You will go home the same day of your surgery. Your incisions will be covered, and all stitches will be placed under the skin to give you the best scar possible. It is normal to have swelling and/or bruising after breast augmentation, and your breasts might feel tight in the days after your surgery. You will be able to shower the day after your surgery. You will be given a prescription for pain medication, and most people report taking the pain medicine for only a few days after surgery. You will follow up in Dr. Hermann’s office a few days after your surgery to check on your progress.
What should I expect as far as recovery time?
Breast augmentation is an outpatient surgery; you will go home the same day. You might be fairly sore in the first 24-48 hours, but this soreness generally improves quickly. Swelling and bruising is common after breast augmentation, but it generally recedes in 3-10 days. Normal social activity can be resumed in 3-5 days, and most people can return to work within 5-7 days. We instruct people not to perform any significant exercise for 4 weeks after your surgery, as exercising can increase your risk of bleeding if started too early.
For those patients who have developed breast ptosis (sagging) either before or after childbirth, a breast lift (mastopexy) is the procedure of choice to return the breasts to a more youthful and perky appearance. Breast ptosis can involve the breast tissue and/or the nipple and areola. A few select patients will have only nipple ptosis than can be restored to normal position with only a scar around the areola. A consultation with Dr. Hermann will give you the information you need to know what type of lift procedure is best for you.
Most patients will require lifting of both the nipple/areola and the breast tissue. The standard way of lifting the breast can leave quite a lot of scars after the procedure. Fortunately, Dr. Hermann is specialty trained in cosmetic breast surgery, and he offers a short-scar technique known as the SPAIR Mastopexy which gives an excellent and long-lasting lift with only about half the scar of the standard lift surgery.
For patients who must undergo either a partial or total mastectomy, breast reconstruction offers a woman the opportunity to restore her self-image. Breast reconstruction can be done as either an immediate procedure at time of mastectomy, or it can be done as a delayed procedure after the mastectomy procedure is completely healed.
Dr. Hermann uses various techniques to reconstruct the breast, and during your consultation your individual preferences and desired outcome will help Dr. Hermann develop a reconstruction plan that is tailored specifically for you.
With specialty training specifically in breast reconstruction, Dr. Hermann offers the latest techniques in breast reconstruction, such as fat grafting and the use of Alloderm.
When a woman’s breasts become too large, they can seriously affect her daily life and make her self-conscious about her appearance. Breast reduction surgery accomplishes two important things – reducing the weight of the breasts, which will alleviate neck and back pain, and lifting the breasts to give them a more youthful and perky appearance.
Dr. Hermann’s specialty training in cosmetic breast surgery allows him to offer the SPAIR breast reduction, an advanced reduction technique which results in long-lasting lift and reduced breast weight with only HALF of the scar of the standard reduction techniques.
Despite what you may have heard, breast reduction surgery is almost always covered by your insurance plan if your breasts are truly too large for your body frame.
Being fellowship trained in cosmetic and reconstructive breast surgery provides Dr. Hermann with the expertise to help patients who have already had breast surgery but are unhappy with their results or have had changes in their results over time. Whether it be breast augmentation, reduction, lifting, or reconstruction, Dr. Hermann has the experience to revise issues with your previous breast surgery from simple to very complex.
